natural language

One topic that came up several times throughout the workshop was the role of natural language in entertainment and fun. Natural language was especially pointed to by Joe Marks, who needed to be able to understand what people were saying -- children, adults, different ethnicities and accents -- so that autonomous characters could respond robustly. Natural language generation and understanding are both hard problems that must be tackled in order to scale up the interactions between humans and autonomous character. It must be made robust enough to handle a very diverse set of inputs. Any accuracy less than 100% means many failures when dealing with the number of people Disney, Humana, and the Army deal with every day. It is interesting to note that none of the research presented at the workshop directly addressed the problems of natural language.
